If you’re in a phase where your toddler is suddenly saying “no” to foods they used to eat, these savory sweet potato waffles are one of my favorite little switches to try!
They’re made with just a few simple ingredients, no flour, and come together so easily. Soft on the inside, lightly crisp on the outside, and perfect for little hands to hold.
My favorite part is you can use them as burger buns! Same food, just a different form and sometimes that’s all it takes. It’s one of those easy ways to keep offering familiar foods without making a completely separate meal, while still supporting your toddler as they learn and explore.

Ingredients You'll Need
Here's what you'll need to make these super easy savory sweet potato waffles:

- sweet potato (mashed) - adds natural sweetness, fiber, and keeps the waffles soft and toddler-friendly
- eggs - helps bind everything together so the waffles hold their shape (especially important since there’s no flour)
- shredded cheddar cheese - adds flavor + helps with structure and a slight crisp on the outside
- optional garlic powder + onion powder - simple way to add savory flavor without making it complicated

How to Make Your Savory Sweet Potato Waffles

- Step 1: In a bowl, combine mashed sweet potato, eggs, and seasonings. Mix until smooth.

- Step 2: Stir in the shredded cheese. Grease your waffle iron well (this helps prevent sticking).

- Step 3: Scoop about 2-3 tablespoons of batter into a mini waffle maker. Cook for 4-6 minutes, or until set and lightly golden.

- Step 4: Allow waffles to cool for 1-2 minutes before removing. They will firm up as they sit.
Hint for the Best Savory Sweet Potato Waffles
Cook a little longer than traditional waffles for structure, and make sure batter is smooth (no chunks) for a better bite!

Substitutions
These savory sweet potato waffles are naturally gluten-free, and can easily be made dairy-free by using dairy-free cheese and egg-free by swapping with flax eggs.
Variations
Feel free to change up these savory sweet potato waffles and customize however!
- swap cheddar for mozzarella or omit all together
- add a pinch of paprika for flavor
- mix in finely chopped spinach for extra veggies

Equipment
All you’ll need is a waffle maker (I used a mini waffle maker for smaller, toddler-friendly portions), a mixing bowl, and a fork or spoon to mash and mix everything together. A measuring cup or cookie scoop can also be helpful to portion the batter evenly, but not necessary.
If you’re using these as burger buns, I definitely recommend a mini waffle maker since the size works perfectly for little hands
Storing Your Savory Sweet Potato Waffles
Store leftover savory sweet potato waffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze them in a single layer first, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 2 months.
To reheat, pop them in the toaster or air fryer to help bring back that slightly crisp texture on the outside (this works much better than the microwave!). If using from frozen, you can reheat straight from the freezer! Just add a couple extra minutes.
They’re perfect to make ahead and have on hand for quick meals or easy toddler-friendly buns throughout the week!
Tiff's Dietitian Tip
If your toddler is one who LOVED sweet potatoes as a baby, but now won't touch them...these are a great way to serve them in a form they prefer! You can even make them mini size and stick a popsicle stick in them for added fun.
Exposure doesn’t always have to mean eating it exactly as served. Sometimes simply changing the shape, texture, or presentation (like turning these into waffle buns) can make a big difference in how your toddler responds to a food!
